Today is Thanksgiving Day and many of us gather with family and friends for food and fellowship. It’s a time for reflection, giving thanks for the blessings we have received. These are difficult economic times our nation is facing and the impact is being felt by individuals and families acrross our communities. It is also a time when individuals have risen to the challenge, helping one another and making a personal committment of their time and resources. The Urban League would like to thank our members, contributors, and friends for their continued support. We wish you a safe and happy holiday.
We’re interested in hearing from you and periodically, we’ll put out “60 second surveys” on particular topics. Our current topic – which of the five focus areas in our mission is most important and least important from your point of view. (more…)
The holidays are coming and what better time to get fit and start a healthy lifestyle. Over 75 students and adults attended the Education Summit held Monday Nov 9. Hosted by the Urban League and Vince Watts, the audience was treated to a wealth of information on preparing for college, sources of scholarships and loans, and what to do to stay in college. Representatives from Mayor Healy’s office, the Stark Community Foundation, the Canton Student Loan Foundation and the Governor’s Education Initiative provided information, resources and tips to successfully and financially transition from high school to college.
The program began with a rousing presentation, “Stemming the Cultural Tide”, by Minister Leslie Parker Barnes from Akron’s Arlington Road Church of God. Dr. Edmund Timothy Moore, Kent State University, was the keynote speaker and talked to students on the importance of their grade point average (GPA) during high school and college. His presentation, “Protecting Your GPA”, showed why it is difficult to recover from a poor GPA and the importance of not letting grades fall behind. Several colleges and universities were on hand during the program to talk to students and distribute materials, including Central State University, Kent State University, Stark State College and Malone University.
Thank you to all of the volunteers, presenters, colleges and universities that made this event a success.
